Failing Year 11 advanced maths and convinced I wasn't a "STEM person." My teacher suggested I drop to general maths.
I found a free YouTube channel teaching Python through making art. Suddenly maths had a purpose — it made things happen on screen.

In Year 11 in Bendigo, no idea what cybersecurity even was. I failed my first coding unit and genuinely thought that was the universe telling me STEM wasn’t for me. There were no women who looked like me in any of the careers my school showed us.
I found a free online cybersecurity challenge — CTF competitions — and suddenly it clicked. It felt like problem-solving, like puzzles. It wasn’t about being the best coder. It was about thinking differently. That was something I could do.

Failing that test was not the end. It was just the wrong test. Find the version of STEM that fits how your brain works — it exists.

17 years old in Mildura, convinced that environmental science was for people from Sydney or Melbourne — not someone like me. My school had no STEM club. I’d never met a scientist.
A Robogals volunteer came to our school. She was First Nations too. That was the first time I’d ever seen myself in this world. I found a regional scholarship online, applied, and got in. That one moment changed everything.

You don’t need a thousand role models. You just need to see one person who looks like you — once. That’s enough to change everything.
